Safer summer means preventing heatstroke

With the Memorial Day weekend now in our rear-view mirrors, temperatures are heating up across the nation. And that means the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is once again reminding Americans to prevent child deaths and injuries from heat stroke in vehicles.

Please raise awareness of the deadly threat that heat stroke poses to young children in hot cars.

Heat stroke is the leading cause of non-crash vehicular deaths for young children. It is especially dangerous because vehicles heat up quickly. Even with a window rolled down two inches, if the outside temperature is in the low 80s, the temperature inside the vehicle can reach deadly levels in just 10 minutes.

In the United States, from 2003 to 2012, 384 children died due to heat stroke in cars, according to researchers at San Francisco State University. We are already saddened by the heat stroke deaths of four children in 2013. The safety of children is a special area of concern. Work hard to spread the message that this is a problem that can be solved.

The solution? Look before you lock. Every time you leave the car.

DOT Ask Drivers To Use Caution During Highway Contruction Season

As highway construction shifts into high gear, the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) is calling on drivers to protect road workers by driving carefully in work zones. 

“We’re asking all Americans to take roadway safety seriously and protect themselves and their passengers by paying attention and slowing down when driving through work zones,” said DOT Secretary Ray LaHood. “In April and year round, the men and women working to improve our nation’s highways and bridges deserve to do their work safely.” 

In 2011, the most recent year for which data are available, 587 people died in highway work-zone fatalities, an increase of 11 fatalities compared to 2010. 

April is the traditional start of construction season, when the number of workers on roads and highways increases. Though highway workers are often among the victims of such crashes, it’s important for drivers to understand that four out of five victims in work-zone crashes are actually drivers and their passengers, the DOT says. In a typical five-day work week, an average of seven motorists and one worker are killed. 

Generally, crashes occur when drivers speed through a work zone or do not pay attention to the changing road conditions and run into other vehicles, highway equipment, or safety barriers or drive off the road completely, the DOT says.
