Everywhere you go, you will find activities known as “tourist attractions”. They’re in every major city. Often times, they are establishments that draw hordes of people and charge them their first born for admission. A lot of times when I travel, I consciously try to avoid tourist traps. I google fun things to do that the locals actually do. I want to get in that mix. Usually, I can find the best hole-in-the-wall food spots, the sketchier the better, and so much more. But guess what? Sometimes, those “touristy” attractions are actually completely worth a visit! I’m serious. Here are four places in Dallas that have a ‘tourist attraction’ reputation, but are definitely worthy of your attention.
The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealy Plaza
It is common knowledge that JFK was assassinated in Dallas, Texas so it’s only natural that there is a museum dedicated to the event. I’m s sucker for museums myself, and I must say The Sixth Floor Museum is a great one. It is located in the former Texas School Book Depository, the very location where Lee Harvey Oswald is believed to have fired the fatal shot. There are detailed sections dedicated to JFK’s day in Dallas, the infamous Zapruder film, and the world impact of the assassination. Get tickets and more info at www.jfk.org.
Klyde Warren Park
I remember when it was announced that a new park was going to be built in the heart of downtown Dallas above a very busy freeway. The idea got an epic side eye from yours truly. Well… I’m taking it back because this park is very cool. There are fountains, complimentary pocket sized first aid kits, and a fun kid’s section. But the best part? George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum
No matter which way you lean, anytime you have a presidential library in your city, that’s pretty cool. Located on the campus of Southern Methodist University, the library and museum has some really neat features. There are temporary exhibits throughout the year (last year there was an Oscar De La Renta exhibition featuring some of the looks he designed for Laura Bush) and there’s even a full scale model of the Oval Office! Reunion Tower
Ah, reunion tower; the beautiful ball of light that has become the most iconic part of the Dallas skyline. I must say, this is one of the coolest places in the city. There is a revolving restaurant in there! It might be a bit on the pricy side, but you can still go up in the ball even if you aren’t eating.
